You can get a surprisingly useful estimate of your roof's size without ever climbing a ladder. Google Maps and Google Earth both include a "measure distance" tool that lets you trace the outline of a building from directly overhead, and from that outline you can work out an approximate roof area. It is a fast way to sanity-check a contractor's quote, budget for shingles, or plan a solar layout before anyone sets foot on the roof.
There is one catch that trips up almost everyone, though: the view from above only shows the flat footprint of your roof, not its true sloped surface. A pitched roof is always larger than the shadow it casts on the ground, so an aerial measurement has to be corrected with a pitch multiplier before it means anything. This guide walks through the whole process — tracing the footprint, applying the slope factor, adding waste, and converting to roofing squares — while being honest about where the method breaks down.
Why the aerial view only shows the footprint
When you look straight down at a house in Google Maps, you are seeing a nadir (top-down) view. What you measure in that view is the roof's footprint: the area the roof covers when projected flat onto the ground, exactly like its shadow at high noon. For a perfectly flat roof, the footprint and the actual surface area are the same. For any pitched roof, they are not.
Picture a gable roof from the end. The two slopes form a shallow triangle, and each slope is the hypotenuse — longer than the horizontal base beneath it. The steeper the pitch, the longer that hypotenuse, and the more the real surface exceeds the footprint. That is why an aerial measurement is only the starting point: it gives you a reliable flat area, which you then scale up to the true sloped area. Step 1 — Trace the roof footprint in Google Maps
Open Google Maps and search your address, then switch to satellite view. Right-click the corner of your roof and choose "Measure distance." Click each corner of the roofline in turn, working your way around the whole perimeter, and close the loop back at your starting point. Google shows a running total, and once the shape is closed it reports the enclosed area in square feet or square meters.
If your roof is a simple rectangle, you can skip the perimeter trace and just measure length and width along two edges, then multiply the two figures. For anything more complex — an L-shaped house, an attached garage, wings at different angles — break the outline into rectangles and triangles, measure each piece, and add them up. Google Earth (the free desktop or web app) offers the same polygon-measuring tool with slightly finer control and a clearer area readout.
Step 2 — Find your roof pitch
Pitch is the roof's steepness, written as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run over 12 inches — a "6/12" roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches it runs. You cannot read pitch reliably from a top-down image, so measure it another way: from inside the attic or against a gable, hold a level out horizontally, mark 12 inches along it, and measure the vertical drop to the roof underside at that point. That drop is your rise.
If you can safely reach the roof edge, you can measure rise and run directly on a rafter or the surface. Common residential pitches run from a gentle 3/12 up to a steep 12/12. Do not guess wildly — the pitch is the single biggest factor in converting footprint to real area, and a wrong estimate here throws off everything downstream. Steep gable ends are essentially triangles, so a triangle area calculation can help you check those sections independently.
Step 3 — Apply the pitch multiplier
Once you have the footprint and the pitch, multiply the footprint by the matching pitch factor to get the true sloped roof area. The pitch factor is the ratio between the sloped length and its horizontal run, and it grows as the roof gets steeper. Here are the common multipliers:
- 3/12 pitch → multiply footprint by about 1.031
- 4/12 pitch → multiply by about 1.054
- 6/12 pitch → multiply by about 1.118
- 8/12 pitch → multiply by about 1.202
- 10/12 pitch → multiply by about 1.302
- 12/12 pitch → multiply by about 1.414
Step 4 — Add waste and convert to roofing squares
The corrected sloped area is the actual surface you need to cover, but you should never order exactly that amount of material. Cuts, overlaps, hips, valleys, and starter courses all create waste, so add roughly 10 percent to a straightforward gable roof — and more, often 15 percent or higher, for cut-up roofs with many hips and valleys. Multiply your sloped area by 1.10 to build in a standard waste allowance.
Roofers price and order material in "squares," where one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. To convert, divide your total (including waste) by 100. So a roof with a 1,600-square-foot footprint at 6/12 pitch works out to about 1,600 × 1.118 = 1,789 sq ft of true area; add 10 percent and you get roughly 1,968 sq ft, or just under 20 squares. Don't forget flat areas like an attic conversion or dormer floor may need separate treatment if they sit under a different slope.
Limitations — treat this as an estimate, not a quote
This method is genuinely useful for planning and budgeting, but it is an estimate, not a substitute for a physical measurement. Satellite imagery can be several years old, so recent additions or a re-roof may not appear. Tree cover, shadows, and low image resolution make corners hard to place precisely, and every click you misplace adds error to the footprint.
Two bigger issues deserve caution. First, some imagery is oblique (shot at an angle) rather than true nadir, which distorts distances and inflates or shrinks your trace. Second, the footprint method ignores overhangs, dormers, and eaves that extend beyond the main outline, and it assumes a uniform pitch across the whole roof.
