Tile is unforgiving to estimate. Unlike a bag of paint you can top up, tile has to match — the same color, the same size, and ideally the same production batch. That makes both mistakes expensive: run short and you may not be able to buy more of your exact tile, run long and you have paid for boxes that sit in the garage forever. Getting the quantity right starts with area and ends with a carefully chosen waste factor.

You will learn the waste factors for different layouts and tile sizes, why grout and spacers barely change the count, how dye lots affect your order, and how to convert square footage into whole boxes. Begin with the area to be tiled
Whether you are tiling a floor, a backsplash, or a shower surround, the calculation starts the same way: measure the surface in feet and multiply length by width to get square footage. For a floor, that is the room's length times its width. For a wall, it is the wall's width times its height. Add up multiple walls or sections separately and total them.
Subtract large openings that will not be tiled, such as a window in a shower wall or the footprint of a vanity, but do not bother subtracting small cutouts like an outlet — the tile you cut around them counts as waste anyway. This base area is the number every waste factor is applied to, so measure carefully before moving on.
Tile-specific waste factors
Tile generates more waste than many other materials because it cannot flex or be seamed, so every edge and obstacle means a cut. For a standard straight or grid layout in a simple room, add 10 percent to your area. That covers perimeter cuts, the occasional broken tile, and a few spares for future repairs.
Diagonal layouts and pattern-heavy designs waste much more. A tile set on the diagonal produces triangular offcuts at every wall, and patterns like herringbone leave awkward gaps that each need a custom cut. For these, plan on 15 percent. If your room has many corners, niches, or angles, push the factor a little higher still — it is far cheaper than a second order.
- Straight or grid layout: add 10 percent.
- Diagonal, herringbone, or patterned layout: add 15 percent.
- Rooms with lots of cuts, niches, or angles: 15 percent or more.
Large-format versus mosaic tile
Tile size changes how much you waste. Large-format tiles — big slabs of 24 inches or more — are efficient across an open field but very wasteful at the edges, because trimming even a strip off a huge tile discards a lot of material and the offcut rarely fits anywhere else. Lean toward the higher end of your waste range for large-format work.
Mosaic tile behaves differently. Sold on mesh-backed sheets, mosaics can often be cut between the individual pieces, so a single sheet stretches further and full-tile waste is lower. That said, the mesh sheets still need trimming at the edges, and the sheet coverage is what you divide by, not the individual chips. Check the sheet's stated square-foot coverage and treat it like any other box.
Grout, spacers, and dye lots
A common question is whether grout lines change the tile count. In practice they barely do. Manufacturers list a box's coverage based on installation with normal grout joints, and spacers simply hold that consistent spacing. You do not add or subtract tile for grout — you just buy grout and spacers separately, sized to your joint width and total area.
Dye lots, on the other hand, matter a great deal with tile. Color, shade, and even size can vary slightly between production batches, and a mismatched box is obvious once it is on the wall. Buy all your tile at once from a single lot or batch number, printed on the box. If you ever have to reorder, there is no guarantee the new tile will match — which is the single strongest argument for building enough waste into your first order.
Turning area into boxes
Tile is sold by the box, with each box covering a stated number of square feet. To find how many boxes to buy, add your waste factor to the base area, then divide by the coverage per box and round up to the next whole box. Say you are tiling a 10 by 12 floor: that is 120 square feet, plus 10 percent is 132 square feet. If a box covers 12 square feet, 132 ÷ 12 = 11 boxes.
If that same floor were laid on the diagonal, you would use 15 percent instead: 120 + 18 = 138 square feet, which at 12 square feet per box is 11.5 boxes, rounded up to 12. Always round up — a partial box does not exist, and rounding down is how installs stall halfway through.
The cost of getting it wrong
Underbuying is the more painful mistake. If you run out mid-job, work stops while you source more, and if your dye lot has sold out you may face a visible mismatch or have to redo a whole section. The delay, the extra delivery, and the risk of a mismatched batch usually cost far more than a spare box would have.
Overbuying wastes money too, but it is the safer error. Many tile retailers accept returns of full, unopened boxes within a set window, so buy from a store with a fair return policy and keep your boxes sealed until you need them. Keeping one box back as repair stock is wise regardless — a single cracked tile years later is a quick swap instead of a hunt for a discontinued match.
