Linear feet and square feet sound similar, but they measure completely different things — and mixing them up is one of the most common ways home projects end up over- or under-ordered. A linear foot is a one-dimensional measurement of length: a straight run of one foot, nothing more. A square foot is a two-dimensional measurement of area: a one-foot square, which is length multiplied by width. What a linear foot measures
A linear foot is simply a foot of length measured in a straight line — the "linear" part just emphasizes that width and thickness do not matter. If you lay a board on the ground and stretch a tape measure along it, the number you read is its length in linear feet. A 10-foot piece of baseboard is 10 linear feet whether it is two inches tall or six inches tall.
Because it ignores width entirely, the linear foot is the natural unit for anything sold in runs of a fixed profile. When the cross-section is always the same, the only variable that changes is how much length you buy, so length is all you need to price and order it.

What a square foot measures
A square foot is a unit of area — the amount of two-dimensional surface something covers. One square foot is a square that measures one foot on every side, and you calculate it by multiplying a length by a width, both in feet. A surface that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide covers 12 × 10 = 120 square feet.
Square footage is the right unit whenever you are covering or filling a surface rather than following a line. Flooring, wall paint, tile, roofing, and siding all describe how much area they cover, so they are quoted, sold, and estimated in square feet. If your project has both a length and a width that matter, you are working in square feet.
The key difference in one sentence
Linear feet measure how long something is; square feet measure how much surface it covers. That single distinction — one dimension versus two — is the whole difference, and it explains why you cannot simply swap one number for the other. Ten linear feet of a six-inch board and ten linear feet of a twelve-inch board are the same length but cover very different areas.
This is why a price "per linear foot" and a price "per square foot" are not interchangeable. A material sold by the linear foot at a low number can be more expensive per square foot than it looks, depending on how wide each piece is. How to convert between them (you need the width)
You can convert between linear feet and square feet, but only when you know the width of the material. The width is the missing dimension that turns a length into an area, so without it no conversion is possible. Once you have it, the two formulas are straightforward:
Say flooring planks are sold by the linear foot and each plank is 0.5 feet (6 inches) wide. To cover 200 square feet, divide the area by the width: 200 ÷ 0.5 = 400 linear feet. Going the other way, if you buy 400 linear feet of that same 0.5-foot-wide plank, it covers 400 × 0.5 = 200 square feet. The width is doing all the work in both directions.
- Square feet = linear feet × width (in feet).
- Linear feet = square feet ÷ width (in feet).
- Always convert the width to feet first (6 inches = 0.5 ft, 3 inches = 0.25 ft).
- No width means no valid conversion — a length alone cannot become an area.
Board feet: a third unit that trips people up
It is worth knowing that lumber has yet another unit — the board foot — which is different from both linear and square feet. A board foot is a measure of volume, not length or area, and it factors in thickness as well as width and length. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches: the volume of a piece one inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long.
You will see board feet used when buying rough hardwood lumber, where thickness genuinely varies from board to board. For most home projects — trim, flooring, siding, fencing — you will only ever deal with linear feet and square feet, but recognizing board feet keeps you from confusing a volume price with a length price at the lumberyard.
Which unit real projects use
Matching the unit to the project is the practical payoff of all this. When you are following a line — the perimeter of a yard for a fence, a wall for baseboard, or the edge of a room for trim — you measure and buy in linear feet. When you are covering a surface — a floor, a wall of siding, or a run of deck boards across a frame — you work in square feet.
The tricky projects are the ones that mix both. Decking and flooring are estimated in square feet for the total area, but the boards themselves may be sold by the linear foot, so you convert using the board width. Countertops are quoted per linear foot of run even though they clearly have area. When a quote and your plan use different units, convert deliberately with the width — don't guess — and your order will match the job.
