Was es bedeutet

To calculate driveway square footage, measure the length and width in feet and multiply them (length × width). For an L-shaped or flared driveway, split it into rectangles, find each area, and add them together. A straight 40 ft × 12 ft driveway is 480 sq ft. Use this figure to estimate concrete, asphalt, gravel, or sealer.

Formel & Anleitung

So wird gerechnet

A driveway is measured as area — length times width in feet. Most driveways are a simple rectangle, but aprons, flares near the garage, and turnarounds add sections, so break any non-rectangular shape into clean rectangles and add them up.

  1. 1Measure the driveway's length and width in feet, from the street apron to the garage.
  2. 2Multiply length × width to get the area of that rectangle in square feet.
  3. 3For an L-shaped, curved, or flared driveway, split it into rectangles and measure each one.
  4. 4Add every rectangle together for the total driveway square footage.

In Zahlen

Main run (40 ft × 12 ft)480 sq ft
Garage apron flare (8 ft × 6 ft)48 sq ft
Total driveway area528 sq ft
Sealer at 300 sq ft/gal (main run)≈ 2 gallons

A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway is 480 sq ft. Sealer covering ~300 sq ft per gallon takes about 2 gallons for one coat.

Genauigkeit & Annahmen

  • Irregular driveways are split into rectangles, measured separately, and added — never one averaged number.
  • Widened flares, aprons, and turnaround pads are included as their own rectangles in the total.
  • Driveway sealer covers roughly 250–400 sq ft per gallon for one coat; a second coat doubles the amount.
  • Paving materials (concrete, asphalt, gravel) also need a depth, which turns area into cubic yards of volume.

Wichtige Tipps & Regeln

  • One gallon of driveway sealer covers about 250–400 sq ft per coat; most jobs use two coats, so buy accordingly.
  • Concrete and asphalt are ordered by volume (area × depth); gravel is too, so pick a depth before estimating material.
  • A single-car driveway is typically 10–12 ft wide; a double-car driveway is about 20–24 ft wide.
  • Measure the actual paved surface — cracked or crumbling edges still count as square footage that needs sealing or repaving.
Anwendungsfälle

Für wen dieser Rechner ist

Sealing a driveway

Divide the square footage by the sealer's coverage per gallon (about 250–400 sq ft) to know how many gallons to buy.

Resurfacing or paving

Combine the area with a depth to order concrete, asphalt, or gravel by the cubic yard for a new or repaved driveway.

Snow-melt or heated driveways

Radiant snow-melt mats and heating cable are sized by the square footage of the surface you want kept clear.

How to measure driveway square footage

Driveway square footage is the total surface area of the drive, measured in square feet, and it is the number every material estimate starts from. The core math is simple — length times width — but real driveways are rarely a perfect rectangle. A flare near the garage, a widened parking pad, or an L-shaped turn all add area that a single length-times-width measurement will miss, so the first step is to look at your driveway from above and picture it as a set of rectangles.

Measure the main run first: pace or tape the length from the street apron to the garage door, then the width across the drive, and multiply the two in feet. A straight 40 ft by 12 ft driveway works out to 480 square feet. Then measure any extra sections — an apron that widens toward the street, a flare beside the garage, or a turnaround — as their own rectangles and add them to the total. Our calculator above handles the multiplication for each rectangle so you can enter every section and read off the combined square footage.

Turning square footage into material — concrete, asphalt, or gravel

Once you have the area, the material you are ordering decides the next step. Sealer is the simplest: it is applied by area, so you divide the square footage by the coverage on the label (usually 250–400 sq ft per gallon) and multiply by the number of coats. A 480 sq ft driveway needs about 2 gallons per coat at 300 sq ft per gallon, or roughly 4 gallons for the two coats most sealers recommend.

Paving is different because concrete, asphalt, and gravel all have depth. To pour a new slab, take the area and multiply by the thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards — the same method the concrete square footage calculator walks through step by step. An asphalt overlay uses the same area figure with its own depth and density, and a gravel base is estimated the same way with the depth of stone you want.

How wide is a driveway, and why it matters

Width is where most estimates drift, because driveways are widened over the years without anyone re-measuring. A single-car driveway is usually 10 to 12 feet wide — enough for one vehicle and a person to walk alongside. A double-car driveway runs about 20 to 24 feet so two cars can park side by side, and driveways that flare toward a two- or three-bay garage can be wider still at the top.

Because width multiplies directly into the total, a driveway that is 2 feet wider than you assumed over a 50-foot run is 100 extra square feet of sealer or paving. Measure the real width at more than one point, and if it changes along the length, treat the wide section as its own rectangle rather than averaging — averaging hides material you will end up needing.

FAQ

FAQ zum Driveway-Rechner

Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A 40 ft by 12 ft driveway is 480 square feet. If the driveway is L-shaped or flared, split it into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together for the total.

Divide the square footage by the sealer's coverage, which is about 250–400 sq ft per gallon for one coat. A 480 sq ft driveway needs roughly 2 gallons per coat at 300 sq ft per gallon. Most sealers recommend two coats, so double that to about 4 gallons.

A single-car driveway is usually 10 to 12 feet wide, and a double-car driveway is about 20 to 24 feet wide so two cars can park side by side. Always measure your own, since width multiplies directly into the total square footage.

Split it into rectangles. Measure the length and width of each straight section separately, multiply to get each area, then add them together. Include aprons, flares near the garage, and turnaround pads as their own rectangles so nothing is left out.
