How to measure lawn square footage accurately
Lawn square footage is the total area of grass you actually mow, seed, and treat — not the size of your whole lot. That distinction matters, because everything you buy for a lawn is priced by the area it covers. Start with the gross rectangle: measure the length and width of the property in feet and multiply them. Then measure each surface that isn't grass — the house and garage footprint, the driveway, walkways, the patio, and any planting beds — and subtract that total. Most yards aren't a single clean rectangle, so the reliable approach is to break the lawn into pieces. Sketch the yard from above, draw each grassed section as its own rectangle, and measure the length and width of each. Multiply length by width for every piece and add them together. Measuring big or irregular lawns
For a large lawn, a tape measure is slow and inaccurate on its own. Pace the distances instead — count your steps across a run and multiply by your stride length, which is close to three feet for most adults. A measuring wheel is more precise and worth borrowing for an acre or more. For curved edges, don't chase the curve; draw the largest rectangle that fits inside the lawn, then add smaller rectangles or triangles to fill the gaps until your shapes roughly cover the grass.
Once you have the square footage, converting to acres is easy: divide by 43,560. A 3,600 sq ft lawn is about 0.08 acres, while a half-acre lot has roughly 21,780 sq ft before you subtract the house. Turning square footage into what to buy
Lawn products come in two rating systems, and your square footage plugs straight into both. Sod is sold by the square foot and by the pallet, where a pallet typically covers 450 to 500 sq ft — so a 3,600 sq ft lawn needs about eight pallets. Seed, fertilizer, weed control, and lime are all dosed per 1,000 square feet, so divide your lawn area by 1,000 to read the bag rate directly. A 3,600 sq ft lawn is 3.6 units of coverage.
Always round up. Edges, overlap, and uneven spreading mean real-world coverage runs a little short of the label, and a second trip to the store for one more bag costs more than the extra you'd have on the shelf. For new lawns and bare-patch repair, use the higher seeding rate on the bag, which is often close to double the maintenance overseeding rate.
