Ordering drywall is one of those jobs where a few minutes of math saves you a second trip to the store — or a stack of leftover sheets you never use. The whole process comes down to two things: finding the total square footage you need to cover, and dividing that number by the area of a single sheet. Once you understand those two steps, estimating drywall for any room becomes straightforward.
This guide walks you through calculating wall and ceiling area, choosing a sheet size, adding the right amount of waste, and converting everything into a clean sheet count you can hand to the lumberyard. We will finish with a fully worked example for a standard bedroom so you can see every number in context.
Start with the wall area
Drywall covers surfaces, so every estimate begins with surface area in square feet. For the four walls of a rectangular room, the fastest formula is 2 × (length + width) × height. This adds up the two long walls and the two short walls in a single step, then multiplies by the ceiling height to get the total wall area.
For example, a room that measures 12 feet by 12 feet with 8-foot ceilings has a wall area of 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 2 × 24 × 8 = 768 square feet. Notice that you use the room's floor dimensions for length and width, but the height is what turns a perimeter into an area. Measure your actual ceiling height rather than assuming eight feet, since nine- and ten-foot walls are increasingly common.
Add the ceiling if you are covering it
If you are drywalling the ceiling as well as the walls, add its area to the total. The ceiling is simply the room's floor footprint, so its area is length × width. For our 12-by-12 room, that is 12 × 12 = 144 square feet.
Adding the ceiling to the walls gives a combined figure of 768 + 144 = 912 square feet for the example room. Not every project includes the ceiling — sometimes it is already finished, or you are only patching walls — so include it only when you actually plan to hang board overhead. Ceilings also use the same sheet sizes, though many pros prefer 5/8-inch board there for sag resistance.
Know your sheet sizes
Drywall comes in standard sheets, and the size you choose determines how many you need and how many seams you will have to finish. The three common lengths are all 4 feet wide, so their area is easy to calculate as width × length.
Larger sheets cover more area per panel and leave fewer joints to tape and mud, which is why professionals often reach for 4x12 sheets on big walls. Smaller 4x8 sheets are lighter, easier to carry through doorways, and simpler to handle solo, which makes them the usual choice for DIY projects and tight spaces.
- 4 x 8 sheet = 32 square feet (the most common DIY size).
- 4 x 10 sheet = 40 square feet.
- 4 x 12 sheet = 48 square feet (fewer seams, but heavy and unwieldy).
Add a waste allowance
You will never use every square inch of every sheet. Cutouts for windows, doors, and outlets create offcuts you cannot reuse, and mistakes happen. The standard practice is to add about 10 percent to your total square footage to cover this waste before you divide into sheets.
Applying 10 percent to the example room's 912 square feet gives 912 × 1.10 = 1,003 square feet of coverage to buy. Add a bit more — 15 percent — if the room has many openings, angled walls, or if you are new to hanging drywall, since practice-run cuts add up. It is far cheaper to have one extra sheet than to halt the job for a supply run.
Convert square footage into sheets
To find your sheet count, divide the total area (including waste) by the area of one sheet, then round up to the next whole number. You always round up because you cannot buy a fraction of a sheet, and rounding down leaves a gap in the wall.
Using 4x8 sheets for the example: 1,003 square feet ÷ 32 square feet per sheet = 31.3 sheets, which rounds up to 32 sheets. If you switched to 4x12 sheets, the same job would be 1,003 ÷ 48 = 20.9, or 21 sheets — fewer panels and far fewer seams to finish, at the cost of heavier lifting.
Don't forget compound, tape, and screws
Sheets are only part of the order. You also need joint compound (mud), joint tape, and drywall screws to finish the installation, and these scale with the surface area and the number of seams rather than the sheet count alone.
As a rough planning guide for budgeting your materials, a five-gallon bucket of all-purpose joint compound covers roughly 450 to 500 square feet of wall through the full taping-and-finishing process, and a 500-foot roll of paper tape handles a typical room's seams. Larger sheets mean fewer joints, which trims your compound and tape usage. Buy screws by the pound; a 1-pound box holds enough number-6 screws for a couple of hundred square feet at standard spacing.
Worked example: a 12 x 12 room with 8-foot ceilings
Putting it all together for a standard 12-by-12 bedroom with 8-foot ceilings, walls and ceiling included: the walls total 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 768 square feet, and the ceiling adds 12 × 12 = 144 square feet, for a combined 912 square feet.
Add 10 percent for waste to reach about 1,003 square feet, then divide by 32 square feet per 4x8 sheet: that comes to 31.3, rounded up to 32 sheets. Pair that with roughly two five-gallon buckets of joint compound, a roll of tape, and a couple pounds of screws, and you can price out a complete drywall order for the room.
