What it means

To calculate concrete from square footage, multiply the slab area by its thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20 ft × 10 ft slab (200 sq ft) at 4 inches thick is 200 × 0.333 = 66.7 cu ft, or about 2.5 cubic yards.

Concrete is a volume, not an area

The trap with concrete is thinking in square feet when you actually need cubic volume. Square footage tells you how much ground the slab covers, but concrete fills a three-dimensional space, so you must multiply that area by the slab's thickness. Convert the thickness from inches to feet first by dividing by twelve, then multiply area times thickness for cubic feet, and divide by 27 to reach cubic yards, the unit suppliers use.

This is why a thicker slab of the same footprint costs proportionally more: doubling a slab from 4 inches to 8 inches doubles the concrete even though the square footage never changes.

Choosing a thickness

Thickness follows the load. A typical residential patio, walkway, or shed pad is poured at 4 inches. A driveway that carries cars usually goes to 4 to 5 inches, and one that will see heavy trucks or an RV often steps up to 5 or 6 inches. Garage floors and structural slabs commonly land at 5 to 6 inches. Getting the thickness right at the estimate stage matters because it drives both the volume you order and the strength you get.

Strength is specified separately as a concrete mix rating in pounds per square inch, and it is not the same thing as thickness. A patio might be poured with a 3,000 psi mix while a driveway that takes vehicle loads is often specified at 3,500 to 4,000 psi, so tell your supplier both the yardage and the strength you need rather than assuming a default. A slab that is thick enough but mixed weak, or strong but too thin, will still fail under the wrong load.

Base, reinforcement, and ordering overage

A durable slab is more than concrete. Most pours sit on a compacted gravel base, typically 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone, which drains water and prevents settling. Reinforcement, whether welded wire mesh or rebar on a grid, controls cracking and holds the slab together once cracks form. Neither the gravel nor the steel changes the concrete volume, but both belong in your material list and budget.

Always order more concrete than the bare calculation shows. Uneven subgrade, spillage, and a slab edge that thickens where it meets the ground all consume extra material, and running short mid-pour creates a cold joint you cannot undo.

Bags versus ready-mix

For small jobs, bagged premix is convenient: an 80 lb bag yields roughly 0.6 cubic feet, a 60 lb bag about 0.45 cubic feet, so you can buy exactly what a small pad needs. But bags add up fast. Once a project passes roughly a cubic yard, or about 45 eighty-pound bags, ready-mix delivered by truck is usually cheaper, more consistent, and far less labor. Ready-mix is sold by the cubic yard, so round your yardage up to the nearest quarter yard and confirm the supplier's minimum load and any short-load fee.

Whichever you choose, the pour is not the end of the job. Fresh concrete gains strength through hydration, a chemical reaction that needs moisture and time rather than simply drying out. Keeping the slab damp for the first several days, by covering it with plastic sheeting or misting it, lets it reach far more of its potential strength than a slab left to dry too fast, which tends to crack and stay weak at the surface. Most of the strength develops in the first week, but concrete keeps curing for weeks and typically reaches its rated strength around 28 days. Plan the pour around the weather too: very hot, dry, or windy conditions pull moisture out too quickly, while a hard frost before the concrete has set can ruin it, so mild, damp conditions give the strongest, most crack-resistant result.
