Was es bedeutet

To calculate wallpaper square footage, find the wall area — perimeter × ceiling height, or add each wall's width × height — then subtract doors and windows. Add 10–15% for pattern repeat and trimming waste. A US double roll covers about 56–60 usable square feet, so divide your total wall area by the usable coverage per roll to get the number of rolls.

Formel & Anleitung

So wird gerechnet

Wallpaper is estimated as wall area — the vertical surface you're covering — not floor area. Measure each wall, remove the openings, then translate square feet into rolls using the coverage printed on the label.

  1. 1Measure each wall's width and multiply by the ceiling height, or multiply the room perimeter by the height for a quick total.
  2. 2Add the walls together, then subtract the area of doors and large windows you won't be papering.
  3. 3Add 10–15% to that net area for pattern repeat, matching, and trimming waste.
  4. 4Divide the padded area by the usable coverage per roll (≈56–60 sq ft for a US double roll) and round up.

In Zahlen

4 walls (48 ft perimeter × 8 ft)384 sq ft
− 1 door + 2 windows−36 sq ft
Net wall area348 sq ft
+ 15% repeat/waste ≈ 400 ÷ 56≈ 8 rolls

384 sq ft of wall − 36 sq ft of openings = 348 sq ft, +15% ≈ 400 sq ft ÷ 56 ≈ 8 rolls.

Genauigkeit & Annahmen

  • Doors and large windows are subtracted; a standard door is about 21 sq ft and a window 12–15 sq ft.
  • Pattern repeat increases waste — the larger the repeat, the more you trim to align each strip.
  • A US single roll covers ~28–30 usable sq ft; a double roll (sold as one bolt) covers ~56–60.
  • Buy every roll from the same batch, or dye-lot number, so colors match across the wall.

Wichtige Tipps & Regeln

  • Wallpaper is bought by the roll but priced and measured by area, so square footage drives the order.
  • US double rolls contain twice the length of a single roll but are sold as one physical bolt.
  • Straight-match and drop-match patterns waste more than random-match or plain papers.
  • Always round rolls up and keep one spare from the same lot for future repairs.

Feature or accent wall

Papering a single wall behind a bed or sofa — measure just that wall's width × height and add a repeat margin.

Whole room

Add all four walls, subtract doors and windows, then convert the net area to rolls for a full installation.

Ceilings

Ceiling paper is measured as floor area (length × width); treat it as an extra surface on top of the walls.

How to measure a room for wallpaper

Wallpaper square footage is the total vertical surface you plan to cover, measured in square feet. The fastest way to get it is to measure the room's perimeter — walk the base of every wall and add the widths — then multiply by the ceiling height. For an irregular room, or when you're only papering some walls, measure each wall separately as width × height and add the ones you want. This is the same wall area math used for painting, so if you've already measured for paint you're most of the way there.

Once you have the gross wall area, subtract the openings you won't cover. A standard interior door removes roughly 21 square feet and an average window 12–15 square feet. Small windows are often left in for simplicity, since a little extra paper protects you against mistakes, but large picture windows and doorways are worth deducting so you don't over-buy.

Why pattern repeat adds waste

Unlike paint, wallpaper has to line up strip to strip. Every roll lists a pattern repeat — the vertical distance before the design starts again. To match the pattern across a seam, the installer trims off part of each strip, and that trimmed material is waste. A plain or random-match paper wastes very little, but a large drop-match repeat can waste a foot or more per strip, which is why the standard advice is to add 10–15% to your net wall area before converting to rolls.

The taller your walls and the larger the repeat, the closer you should sit to the 15% end of that range. If you're papering a tall stairwell or a room with a big bold motif, some installers add 20%. It's always cheaper to buy one extra roll now than to hunt for a matching dye lot later.

Turning square footage into rolls

Wallpaper is sold by the roll, and US rolls come in two forms: a single roll covers about 28–30 usable square feet, while a double roll — one physical bolt holding twice the length — covers about 56–60. European rolls are narrower and longer, typically covering around 55–56 square feet each. Divide your padded wall area by the usable coverage on the label, not the total printed area, because the first and last strips of every roll usually can't be used in full.

After you know the roll count, you can price the job with the cost calculator, or check the room's floor plan first with the room calculator. Always round the roll count up and set aside one leftover roll from the same batch for future patches.

FAQ

FAQ zum Wallpaper-Rechner

Multiply the room perimeter by the ceiling height, or add each wall's width × height, to get the gross wall area. Subtract doors and large windows, then add 10–15% for pattern repeat and trimming. A 48 ft perimeter × 8 ft ceiling is 384 sq ft; minus 36 sq ft of openings leaves 348, and +15% is about 400 sq ft to buy.

Divide your padded wall area by the usable coverage per roll and round up. A US double roll covers about 56–60 usable square feet, so 400 square feet of wall needs roughly 8 rolls (400 ÷ 56 ≈ 7.1, rounded up). Buy one extra from the same batch for repairs, since dye lots vary between print runs.

Yes. The pattern repeat is how far the design travels before it starts again, and matching it across seams means trimming — and wasting — part of every strip. Plain or random-match papers waste little, but large drop-match repeats waste much more. Add 10–15% to your net wall area for an average repeat, and up to 20% for tall walls or big motifs.

In the US, a double roll is one physical bolt that holds twice the length of a single roll, so it covers about 56–60 usable square feet versus 28–30 for a single. Wallpaper is almost always sold as double rolls even though prices are sometimes quoted per single roll, so check the coverage on the label before you order.
