Qué significa

To calculate an apartment's square footage, measure the length and width of every room in feet, multiply them together for each room, and add the room areas up. A studio with a 15 ft × 18 ft living space and a 5 ft × 8 ft bath is 270 + 40 = 310 sq ft. This interior figure is what you actually live in.

Fórmula y guía

Cómo se calcula

An apartment's square footage is the sum of every room's area. Measure inside the walls, room by room, and add the pieces together — closets and hallways included, balconies kept separate.

  1. 1Measure the length and width of each room in feet (measure inside the walls, floor level).
  2. 2Multiply length × width for each room to get its area in square feet.
  3. 3Add every room together — bedrooms, living areas, kitchen, bath, closets, and hallways.
  4. 4Keep balconies, patios, and storage lockers on separate lines; they aren't interior square footage.

Míralo en números

Living/dining (15 ft × 18 ft)270 sq ft
Bedroom (12 ft × 11 ft)132 sq ft
Kitchen (9 ft × 7 ft)63 sq ft
Bathroom (5 ft × 8 ft)40 sq ft

Living 270 + bedroom 132 + kitchen 63 + bath 40 = 505 sq ft of interior space.

Precisión y supuestos

  • Each room is measured as a rectangle; split L-shaped rooms into two rectangles and add them.
  • Measurements are taken inside the finished walls — the carpet or interior area you occupy.
  • Closets, hallways, and entry areas count as interior square footage.
  • Balconies, patios, and exterior storage are listed separately, not in the interior total.

Consejos y reglas clave

  • Interior (carpet) area is measured inside the walls — the space a renter actually uses.
  • Gross area adds the thickness of walls and a share of common space, so it reads larger than interior area.
  • Balconies and patios are usually quoted separately and should not inflate the interior figure.
  • Rent per square foot = monthly rent ÷ interior square footage, the fairest way to compare units.

How to calculate the square footage of an apartment

An apartment's square footage is the total floor area of every room added together, measured in square feet. The math is the same as any room measurement — length times width — but an apartment is several rooms, so the job is to measure each one and sum them. Sketch a quick floor plan from above, label each room, and work through them one at a time so nothing is missed and nothing is counted twice.

Measure the length and width of each rectangular room in feet, multiply the two numbers for each room, and add every room's area together. Include the bedrooms, living and dining areas, kitchen, bathrooms, closets, and hallways. If a room is L-shaped, split it into two rectangles at the corner, calculate each, and add them. The calculator above does the multiplication and keeps a running total as you enter each room.

Interior area vs. the number on the listing

The figure you measure inside the walls is the interior or carpet area — the space you actually live in. Many listings quote a larger number, because a gross or rentable figure can include the thickness of the walls and a share of common areas like hallways and lobbies. That's why a listing sometimes reads bigger than a tape measure suggests. Neither number is wrong, but only interior area describes usable space, so measure it yourself when the difference matters.

This is also why apartment figures and house figures aren't always measured the same way. When you compare units, make sure you're comparing interior to interior. If a listing gives only a gross number, measuring the rooms yourself gives you the honest, usable total to weigh against the rent.

Using square footage to compare rentals

Once you have an interior total, rent per square foot turns two very different apartments into a fair comparison. Divide the monthly rent by the interior square footage: a $1,800 unit at 600 sq ft is $3.00 per sq ft, while a $2,100 unit at 800 sq ft is $2.63 — the larger apartment is the better deal per foot even though it costs more each month. Do the same math for every unit on your shortlist.

Keep balconies and patios out of the interior figure so the comparison stays clean; outdoor space is nice, but it isn't heated, walled living area. With a consistent interior number for each apartment, you can weigh price, space, and value side by side and pick the unit that genuinely fits your budget and your life.

Measure the length and width of every room in feet, multiply them for each room, and add the room areas together. For example, a 15 ft × 18 ft living area (270 sq ft) plus a 12 ft × 11 ft bedroom (132 sq ft) and a 5 ft × 8 ft bath (40 sq ft) totals 442 sq ft. Include closets and hallways; keep balconies separate.

Interior (or carpet) area is measured inside the walls — the space you actually use and furnish. Gross or rentable area is larger because it can include the thickness of the walls and a share of common areas like hallways and lobbies. Listings often quote the larger figure, so measure the interior yourself when usable space matters.

Usually not. Balconies, patios, and exterior storage are outdoor space and are typically listed separately from interior square footage, not added into it. When comparing apartments, keep them on their own line so an outdoor area doesn't make one unit look bigger inside than it really is.

Calculate rent per square foot by dividing the monthly rent by the interior square footage. A $1,800 apartment at 600 sq ft is $3.00 per sq ft; a $2,100 apartment at 800 sq ft is $2.63 per sq ft. Measuring each unit the same way — interior area only — lets you compare value fairly instead of just monthly price.
