Qué significa

To calculate countertop square footage, measure the length and depth of each counter section in feet, multiply them (length × depth), and add the sections together. Standard base-cabinet counters are 25.5 inches (about 2.13 ft) deep. Add a 10–15% waste factor for seams, cutouts, and edge fabrication when ordering slabs.

Fórmula y guía

Cómo se calcula

Countertops are measured as area — the sum of every counter run and island. Because counters are long and shallow, measuring in inches and converting to feet keeps you accurate.

  1. 1Measure the length and depth of each counter section in inches, then divide by 12 to get feet.
  2. 2Multiply length × depth for each section to get its area in square feet.
  3. 3Add every section (including the island) together for the total countertop area.
  4. 4Add a 10–15% waste factor for seams, sink and cooktop cutouts, and edge profiles.

Return run (6 ft × 2.13 ft)12.8 sq ft

34.1 sq ft of counter + 15% waste ≈ 39 sq ft of slab to order.

Precisión y supuestos

  • Standard base-cabinet countertops are 25.5 in (≈2.13 ft) deep; islands and peninsulas vary.
  • Overhangs add depth — a 1.5 in front overhang makes a 25.5 in counter about 27 in deep.
  • Backsplashes are calculated separately as wall area, not counter area.
  • Sink and cooktop cutouts are not subtracted — fabricators cut them from the slab you buy.

Consejos y reglas clave

  • Slabs (granite, quartz, marble) are priced per square foot, so this figure drives your quote.
  • A 10–15% waste factor covers seams, cutouts, breakage, and matching veining across pieces.
  • Measure to the outer edge of the cabinets and add any overhang beyond the cabinet face.
  • For an L-shaped counter, split it at the corner into two rectangles so you don't double-count.

How to measure countertop square footage accurately

Countertop square footage is the total surface area of every counter run in your kitchen or bathroom, measured in square feet. Fabricators price granite, quartz, and marble slabs by the square foot, so an accurate figure is the difference between a quote you can trust and an expensive surprise. The math itself is simple — length times depth for each section — but counters are rarely a single rectangle, so the trick is breaking the layout into clean pieces.

Start by sketching your counters from above. Draw each straight run as its own rectangle, then measure the length and depth of each in inches. Most base-cabinet counters are 25.5 inches deep, but always measure your own, because a front overhang can push the finished depth to 27 inches or more. Convert every measurement to feet by dividing by 12, multiply length by depth for each rectangle, and add them together. Our calculator above does the multiplication and the waste factor for you — just enter each section.

Why you add a waste factor for slabs

A fabricator can't lay your countertop pieces onto a slab with zero gaps. Veining has to be matched across a seam, sink and cooktop cutouts remove material that can't be reused, and edges are ground and polished. Because of this, professionals order 10–15% more material than the raw counter area. For a busy kitchen with an island and multiple seams, use the higher end of that range; for a single straight run, 10% is usually plenty.

If you're comparing this to a flooring estimate, the principle is the same — you always buy a little more than you cover. Once you know the slab area, plug it into the square footage cost calculator with your price per square foot to turn the measurement into a real budget.

Countertops vs. backsplash — measure them separately

The backsplash is a vertical surface, so it's wall area, not counter area. Measure it as length times height (a standard backsplash is 4 inches tall, a full-height backsplash reaches the upper cabinets) and keep it on a separate line from the horizontal counter. If you're tiling the backsplash rather than running slab up the wall, the wall square footage calculator is the right tool for that piece.

Preguntas sobre la calculadora de Countertop

Measure the length and depth of each counter section in feet and multiply them, then add the sections together. Standard counters are about 2.13 ft (25.5 in) deep. For a 10 ft main run plus a 6 ft return, that's 21.3 + 12.8 = 34.1 sq ft. Add 10–15% waste for seams and cutouts when ordering slab.

Standard base-cabinet countertops are 25.5 inches deep (about 2.13 feet), which covers a 24-inch cabinet plus a small front overhang. Islands, peninsulas, and bar tops vary widely, so measure each one. Always measure to the finished front edge, including any overhang, not just the cabinet face.

No. Fabricators cut the sink and cooktop openings out of the slab you purchase, so the material still has to be bought. Measure the full counter area as if it were solid, then add a waste factor. Subtracting cutouts would leave you short on material.

Add 10–15% to the raw counter area. The waste covers seam matching, sink and cooktop cutouts, edge fabrication, and breakage. Use 10% for a single straight run and 15% for kitchens with an island, multiple seams, or highly patterned stone that needs veining matched across pieces.
