How to measure driveway square footage
Driveway square footage is the total surface area of the drive, measured in square feet, and it is the number every material estimate starts from. The core math is simple — length times width — but real driveways are rarely a perfect rectangle. A flare near the garage, a widened parking pad, or an L-shaped turn all add area that a single length-times-width measurement will miss, so the first step is to look at your driveway from above and picture it as a set of rectangles.
Measure the main run first: pace or tape the length from the street apron to the garage door, then the width across the drive, and multiply the two in feet. A straight 40 ft by 12 ft driveway works out to 480 square feet. Then measure any extra sections — an apron that widens toward the street, a flare beside the garage, or a turnaround — as their own rectangles and add them to the total. Turning square footage into material — concrete, asphalt, or gravel
Once you have the area, the material you are ordering decides the next step. Sealer is the simplest: it is applied by area, so you divide the square footage by the coverage on the label (usually 250–400 sq ft per gallon) and multiply by the number of coats. A 480 sq ft driveway needs about 2 gallons per coat at 300 sq ft per gallon, or roughly 4 gallons for the two coats most sealers recommend.
Paving is different because concrete, asphalt, and gravel all have depth. To pour a new slab, take the area and multiply by the thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards — the same method the concrete square footage calculator walks through step by step. An asphalt overlay uses the same area figure with its own depth and density, and a gravel base is estimated the same way with the depth of stone you want.
How wide is a driveway, and why it matters
Width is where most estimates drift, because driveways are widened over the years without anyone re-measuring. A single-car driveway is usually 10 to 12 feet wide — enough for one vehicle and a person to walk alongside. A double-car driveway runs about 20 to 24 feet so two cars can park side by side, and driveways that flare toward a two- or three-bay garage can be wider still at the top.
Because width multiplies directly into the total, a driveway that is 2 feet wider than you assumed over a 50-foot run is 100 extra square feet of sealer or paving. Measure the real width at more than one point, and if it changes along the length, treat the wide section as its own rectangle rather than averaging — averaging hides material you will end up needing.
