Qué significa

To find the square footage of a regular hexagon, multiply the side length squared by about 2.598 (area ≈ 2.598 × side²). If you measured the flat-to-flat width instead, use area ≈ 0.866 × width². A regular hexagon is exactly six equilateral triangles, so you can also find one triangle's area and multiply by six.

Fórmula y guía

Cómo se calcula

A regular hexagon has six equal sides. Its area depends only on one measurement — either the side length or the flat-to-flat width across parallel sides — so pick whichever one you can measure cleanly.

  1. 1Measure one side length (a) in feet, or the flat-to-flat width (w) across two parallel sides.
  2. 2From the side: multiply a × a, then multiply by 2.598 (that's the 3√3 ÷ 2 constant).
  3. 3From the width: multiply w × w, then multiply by 0.866 for the area.
  4. 4To double-check, compute one equilateral triangle (½ × side × height, height = side × 0.866) and multiply by 6.

A regular hexagon with 6 ft sides ≈ 93.5 sq ft.

Precisión y supuestos

  • The formulas assume a regular hexagon — all six sides and angles are equal. Irregular hexagons must be split into triangles.
  • Side length (a) and flat-to-flat width (w) are different measurements; use the 2.598 constant for side, 0.866 for width.
  • Flat-to-flat width is measured across two parallel sides, not corner-to-corner (the corner-to-corner distance equals 2 × side).
  • The 6-triangle method works because a regular hexagon is exactly six identical equilateral triangles meeting at the center.

Consejos y reglas clave

  • From the side length: area = (3√3 ÷ 2) × a² ≈ 2.598 × a².
  • From the flat-to-flat width: area ≈ 0.866 × w².
  • A regular hexagon splits into 6 equilateral triangles, each with base = side and height = side × 0.866.
  • The corner-to-corner distance (across opposite vertices) equals twice the side length.

Gazebos

Most gazebos have a hexagonal footprint — measure one side to size the floor, roof, or screening.

Hexagon patios and decks

Get the area of a six-sided patio or deck to order pavers, boards, or concrete.

Tile and paver patterns

Hexagon tiles cover a floor edge-to-edge; know one tile's area to estimate how many you need.

How to calculate the square footage of a hexagon

A regular hexagon is one of the friendliest shapes to measure because its entire area comes from a single number. If you know the side length, the area is (3√3 ÷ 2) × side², which works out to about 2.598 × side². So a hexagon with 6-foot sides covers 2.598 × 36 ≈ 93.5 square feet. That one constant — 2.598 — does all the work, because every regular hexagon is geometrically similar.

Sometimes it's easier to measure straight across the shape than to measure a single edge. The flat-to-flat width (w) is the distance between two parallel sides, and for that measurement the area is approximately 0.866 × w². Just be careful which width you're reading: the flat-to-flat distance is shorter than the corner-to-corner distance, and the corner-to-corner span is exactly twice the side length.

The six-triangle method (and the calculator above)

The reason the hexagon formula is so clean is that a regular hexagon is exactly six equilateral triangles fanning out from the center. Each triangle has a base equal to the side length and a height equal to side × 0.866. So you can find the area of one triangle with ½ × base × height, then multiply by six — you'll land on the same 2.598 × side² answer.

This is handy with the calculator above: switch to the triangle tab, enter the side as the base and side × 0.866 as the height, read the single-triangle area, and multiply by six. It's a reliable way to double-check the shape when you only trust your own arithmetic.

Hexagons in real projects

Hexagons show up constantly in home and garden projects — gazebo floors, six-sided patios and decks, fire-pit surrounds, and hexagonal tile. Once you have the square footage, ordering material is the easy part: multiply the area by your price per square foot with the square footage cost calculator, and remember to add a little waste for cuts. If your project mixes shapes, the same triangle-based logic scales up to an octagon and other regular polygons.

Preguntas sobre la calculadora de Hexagon

For a regular hexagon, multiply the side length squared by about 2.598 (area ≈ 2.598 × side²). A hexagon with 6-foot sides is 2.598 × 36 ≈ 93.5 sq ft. If you measured the flat-to-flat width instead, use area ≈ 0.866 × width².

The exact formula is area = (3√3 ÷ 2) × a², where a is the side length. The constant (3√3 ÷ 2) is about 2.598, so area ≈ 2.598 × a². It only works for a regular hexagon, where all six sides and angles are equal.

Yes. If you measure the flat-to-flat width (w) across two parallel sides, the area is approximately 0.866 × w². Just don't confuse it with the corner-to-corner distance, which is longer and equals twice the side length.

A regular hexagon divides into six identical equilateral triangles that meet at its center, each with a base equal to the side and a height of side × 0.866. Find one triangle's area (½ × base × height) and multiply by six to get the hexagon's total area.
