Then divide that total by the square footage of one paver to get the number of pavers. A 6×6 paver covers 0.25 sq ft (4 per sq ft), so a 100 sq ft patio needs about 400 pavers. How to calculate square footage for pavers

Paver square footage is the surface area you plan to cover, measured in square feet, and it's the starting point for every paver order. For a simple rectangular patio or walkway, measure the length and the width in feet and multiply them together — a 20 by 15 foot patio is 300 square feet. If your space is L-shaped or has a bump-out, split it into clean rectangles, calculate each one, and add the pieces together so nothing is double-counted.

Square footage alone doesn't tell you how many pavers to buy, though. That depends on the size of the paver you choose. Divide the total area by the area of a single paver: a 6×6 paver covers a quarter of a square foot, so you fit four into every square foot, while a 12×12 paver is exactly one square foot each. Choosing a paver size and adding a waste factor

Common paver sizes translate directly into pavers per square foot. A 6×6 gives you 4 per square foot, a 4×8 clay brick works out to roughly 4.5 per square foot, and a 12×12 is a clean 1 per square foot. Multiply your square footage by the per-square-foot figure to get a raw count, then always round up — you can't buy a fraction of a paver.

On top of that, add a waste factor for the pavers you'll cut and occasionally crack. A straight running-bond pattern wastes little, so 5% is usually enough, but herringbone and 45-degree diagonal layouts create many angled edge cuts, so plan for 10%. What goes under the pavers

Pavers are never laid straight on dirt. They sit on a compacted base of 4 to 6 inches of crushed gravel that carries the load and drains water away, topped with about an inch of bedding sand that the pavers are set and leveled into. Both layers are ordered by volume, not just area, so measure the same square footage but multiply by the depth of each layer.

Estimate the base with a gravel base calculation and the setting layer with a bedding sand estimate. Skipping or under-building the base is the most common reason paver patios sink and shift, so it's worth ordering these at the same time as the pavers themselves.
