ماذا يعني

To calculate gravel, first find the area: multiply length × width in feet. Then multiply that area by your depth in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A 360 sq ft driveway at 4 inches (0.33 ft) deep needs about 4.4 cubic yards. Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so that's about 6 tons.

الصيغة والدليل

كيف يتم الحساب

Gravel is sold by volume (cubic yards) or by weight (tons), so you start with area in square feet and then factor in depth. The deeper the layer, the more gravel each square foot needs.

  1. 1Measure the length and width of the area in feet and multiply them for the square footage.
  2. 2Convert your desired depth to feet — divide inches by 12 (4 in ÷ 12 = 0.33 ft).
  3. 3Multiply area × depth, then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
  4. 4Multiply cubic yards by 1.4 to estimate tons, since gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per yard.

Area (30 ft × 12 ft)360 sq ft
Depth (4 in)0.33 ft
Cubic yards (360 × 0.33 ÷ 27)≈ 4.4 cu yd
Tons (4.4 × 1.4)≈ 6 tons

A 30 × 12 ft driveway is 360 sq ft; at 4 in deep that's ≈4.4 cubic yards or ≈6 tons of gravel.

الدقة والافتراضات

  • Depth depends on use: 2–3 in for garden paths and walkways, 4 in for driveways.
  • Driveways are usually built in two layers — a coarse base course plus a finer top course.
  • Loose gravel compacts about 15–20% once tamped, so order a little extra for firm coverage.
  • For irregular areas, split the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.

نصائح وقواعد أساسية

  • Gravel is priced by the cubic yard or by the ton — this tool gives you both to compare quotes.
  • One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep, roughly 80 sq ft at 4 inches.
  • A base course carries the load while a thinner topcoat gives the finished surface and look.
  • Gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though heavier crushed stone can run higher.

Gravel driveways

Size a driveway at 4 in deep, often split into a base and top layer for durability.

Paths and walkways

Garden paths need only 2–3 in of gravel, so they use far less material per square foot.

Drainage beds

French drains and dry wells use clean gravel — measure the trench area and depth to order.

How to calculate how much gravel you need

Gravel is a volume material, so square footage alone won't tell you how much to buy — you also need a depth. Start by measuring the length and width of the area in feet and multiplying them for the square footage. A driveway that runs 30 feet by 12 feet, for example, is 360 square feet. That number is your coverage area, and it stays the same whether you spread the gravel thin for a path or deep for a driveway.

To turn area into an order quantity, multiply the square footage by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet into cubic yards. A quick rule of thumb: one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. The calculator above does this conversion for you and also estimates tonnage, so you can order whichever way your supplier prices gravel.

Choosing the right depth for driveways and paths

Depth is the single biggest factor in how much gravel you'll need. Light-traffic garden paths and walkways only need 2 to 3 inches, while a driveway that carries vehicle weight should be laid 4 inches deep. Many driveways are built in two layers: a coarse base course of larger stone for structure, topped with a finer gravel that packs down into a smooth driving surface.

Remember that loose gravel compacts when it's rolled or driven on, losing roughly 15 to 20 percent of its loose volume. It's smart to order a little extra so you can top up low spots after the first few weeks. If you're deciding between gravel and a poured surface, compare the numbers against a concrete estimate before you buy.

Cubic yards versus tons when ordering

Suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard (a volume) or by the ton (a weight), and switching between them trips a lot of people up. Because gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, you can multiply your cubic-yard figure by 1.4 to estimate tons. Denser crushed stone weighs a bit more, so ask your supplier for the exact conversion for the product you're buying.

Once you know the quantity, plug your price per cubic yard or per ton into the square footage cost calculator to turn the measurement into a delivered budget, including any spread or haulage fees.

أسئلة حول حاسبة Gravel

Measure the length and width of the area in feet and multiply them together. A 30 ft by 12 ft driveway is 360 square feet. That square footage is your coverage area. To find how much gravel to order, multiply the area by your depth in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 360 sq ft area at 4 inches deep needs about 4.4 cubic yards. Since gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, multiply cubic yards by 1.4 — about 6 tons in this example.

Depth depends on the job. Garden paths and walkways need only 2 to 3 inches of gravel. Driveways that carry vehicle weight should be laid 4 inches deep, often in two layers — a coarse base course and a finer top course. Deeper layers use more gravel per square foot, so depth drives your order.

Multiply the driveway's length by its width for the square footage, then use a 4-inch depth. A 30 by 12 ft driveway is 360 sq ft, which at 4 inches deep needs about 4.4 cubic yards, or roughly 6 tons. Order a little extra to allow for compaction once the gravel is driven on.
