Reading pitch and turning it into a slope factor
Roof pitch is written as rise over run, such as 6/12, meaning the roof climbs 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches it travels horizontally. Because the sloped surface is longer than the flat footprint beneath it, you multiply the footprint by a slope factor to get the true covered area. The factor is the length of the sloped line above one foot of run, and it grows as the roof steepens.
As a working reference: a 3/12 pitch carries a factor of about 1.031, a 4/12 about 1.054, a 6/12 about 1.118, an 8/12 about 1.202, a 9/12 about 1.25, and a 12/12 (a full 45 degrees) about 1.414. So a low 3/12 roof adds only about 3 percent to the flat area, while a steep 12/12 adds roughly 41 percent. Knowing these values lets you sanity-check any estimate at a glance.
Measuring from the ground
You rarely need to climb up to size a roof. Measure the building's footprint at ground level, including the eave overhangs, to get the plan area the roof actually covers. Then determine the pitch. You can read it from inside the attic by holding a level against a rafter and measuring the rise over a 12-inch run, or from the ground using a pitch-finder app and a photo taken square to the gable end.
Footprint times the matching slope factor gives the true surface area without ever setting foot on the shingles. This ground-based method is safer, faster, and accurate enough for ordering material. If the overhang is deep, add it to each side of the footprint before applying the factor, since the eaves carry roofing just like the rest of the plane and are easy to leave out when you measure only to the outer walls.
Squares, hips, valleys, and waste
Roofers order in squares, where one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Divide your total area by 100 to get squares, then add waste. Simple gable roofs waste little material, but every hip, valley, dormer, and penetration forces angled cuts that create offcuts you cannot reuse. A straightforward roof might need a 10 percent allowance; a cut-up roof with several valleys and dormers can need 15 percent or more.

Handling complex roofs
A roof with several intersecting sections is best handled the same way you would an irregular floor: break it into individual planes, size each one from its own footprint and pitch, and add them together. Hip roofs, cross-gables, and additions with different pitches each get their own calculation. Measuring plane by plane keeps a complicated roof manageable and prevents the double-counting or missed sections that plague a single whole-building estimate.
It also pays to think about material beyond the field shingles once a roof gets complicated. Valleys need either woven shingles or a metal valley flashing running their full length, hips and ridges consume cap shingles measured in linear feet, and every pipe, vent, and chimney needs its own flashing. None of these appear in a plain area calculation, so list the linear feet of every hip, valley, and ridge, and count each penetration, while the geometry is still in front of you. Underlayment is ordered by area and ice-and-water shield by the linear foot along the eaves, which means your square-footage figure feeds several separate material lists at once. Pulling all of them from one careful measuring session is far more reliable than climbing back up for each item.
