ماذا يعني

To calculate mulch, first find the area of each bed: length × width in feet. Then pick a depth — 2 to 3 inches is standard. At 3 inches, one 2 cubic foot bag covers about 8 sq ft and a cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft. Divide your total area by the coverage for your depth to get bags or cubic yards.

الصيغة والدليل

كيف يتم الحساب

Mulch starts as an area problem and ends as a volume problem. You measure the bed surface in square feet, then multiply by the depth to find how much material fills that layer.

  1. 1Measure the length and width of each bed in feet and multiply them (length × width) to get its area in square feet.
  2. 2Choose a depth in inches (2–3 in is typical) and convert it to feet by dividing by 12.
  3. 3Multiply area × depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
  4. 4Divide cubic feet by 2 for the number of 2 cubic foot bags, or order cubic yards in bulk.

بالأرقام

Bed area (25 ft × 10 ft)250 sq ft
Depth 3 in (0.25 ft) → volume62.5 cu ft
Cubic yards (62.5 ÷ 27)≈ 2.3 cu yd
Bags (62.5 ÷ 2)≈ 31 bags

A 25 ft × 10 ft bed = 250 sq ft; at 3 in that's ≈ 2.3 cubic yards, or about 31 bags.

الدقة والافتراضات

  • Depth is 2–3 inches; 2 in suits annual beds and refreshes, 3 in is best for weed control and new beds.
  • Refreshing an existing bed needs less mulch (top up ~1 in) than starting a bare bed from scratch.
  • Irregular or curved beds are split into rectangles, then the areas are added together.
  • Order 5–10% extra — mulch settles after spreading and coverage estimates are rounded.

نصائح وقواعد أساسية

  • Bagged mulch is sold in 2 cubic foot bags; bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard.
  • One cubic yard equals 13.5 of the 2 cubic foot bags.
  • At 2 in deep, a 2 cu ft bag covers ~12 sq ft; at 3 in deep it covers ~8 sq ft.
  • One cubic yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3 inches, or roughly 162 sq ft at 2 inches.

Garden and flower beds

Measure each bed as length × width and mulch 2–3 in deep to hold moisture and block weeds.

Around trees and shrubs

Mulch a ring, not a volcano — keep it a few inches off the trunk and 3 in deep out to the drip line.

Playground and pathways

Play areas use a deeper 6–12 in layer for fall protection, so multiply the depth accordingly.

How to calculate how much mulch you need

Mulch is one of the easiest landscaping materials to estimate once you separate the two questions it asks. The first is area: how much ground are you covering? The second is depth: how thick should the layer be? Area is simple square footage — length times width for each bed, added together. Depth is where mulch differs from a flat covering like sod, because you are filling a three-dimensional layer, not just carpeting a surface.

Once you have your total square footage and a target depth, the conversion is mechanical. Multiply the area by the depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards, the unit bulk suppliers use. A quick shortcut: at the popular 3-inch depth, every 100 square feet needs roughly one cubic yard of mulch, so a 300-square-foot bed is close to three yards.

Bags or bulk — which should you buy?

Bagged mulch comes in standard 2 cubic foot bags and is the right choice for small jobs: it is clean to transport, easy to store, and lets you buy an exact amount. The trade-off is price and effort per cubic foot. Because one cubic yard equals 13.5 bags, a large project quickly turns into dozens of bags to haul and split open.

Bulk mulch, sold by the cubic yard and delivered in a pile, becomes cheaper per yard and far less work once you cross roughly 6–8 bags — about half a yard. A good rule: use bags for a single bed or a refresh, and switch to bulk delivery when you are mulching a whole yard. If you also plan to reseed open areas, the lawn calculator handles that side of the project.

Getting the depth right

Depth matters as much as area. Too thin and weeds push through and the soil dries out; too thick and you can suffocate roots and encourage rot against stems. For most flower and shrub beds, 2 to 3 inches is the sweet spot — 2 inches when you are topping up existing mulch, and a full 3 inches for a new bed that needs strong weed suppression.

Remember that mulch settles and decomposes, so a bed mulched at 3 inches in spring may be down to 2 inches by late summer. Refreshing once a year, rather than piling on a thick new layer every time, keeps the total depth healthy and saves material.

أسئلة حول حاسبة Mulch

Measure each bed's length and width in feet and multiply them for the area, then add the beds together. For a 25 ft by 10 ft bed that's 250 sq ft. Multiply the area by your depth in feet (3 in = 0.25 ft) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards or by 2 for the number of 2 cubic foot bags.

Each 2 cubic foot bag covers about 12 sq ft at 2 inches deep or 8 sq ft at 3 inches. Divide your total square footage by that coverage. A 250 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs about 31 bags. Since one cubic yard equals 13.5 bags, large jobs are usually cheaper and easier to buy in bulk.

For most flower and shrub beds, spread mulch 2 to 3 inches deep. Use 2 inches when refreshing an existing layer and a full 3 inches for a new bed to suppress weeds and hold moisture. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems. Playground mulch is a special case, laid 6 to 12 inches deep for fall protection.

Buy bags for small jobs — a single bed or a refresh — because you can purchase an exact amount and they are easy to haul. Switch to bulk, sold by the cubic yard, once you need more than about 6 to 8 bags, since one cubic yard replaces 13.5 bags and costs less per yard. Bulk is delivered as a pile you spread yourself.
