ماذا يعني

To calculate sod, measure the length and width of each grassed area in feet and multiply them (area = length × width). Add those areas together, then subtract flower beds, the driveway, and any structures. Add 5–10% for cuts around curves and edges. Divide the total by 450 to estimate pallets, since one pallet covers about 450 sq ft.

الصيغة والدليل

كيف يتم الحساب

Sod is pure area — there is no depth to figure in, unlike mulch or gravel. Measure the ground you want covered in grass, break odd shapes into rectangles, and add a small allowance for the pieces you trim off.

  1. 1Measure the length and width of each area you want to sod, in feet.
  2. 2Multiply length × width for each area, then add the areas together.
  3. 3Subtract flower beds, the driveway, walkways, and any structures that won't be grassed.
  4. 4Add 5–10% for waste, then divide by 450 to estimate the number of pallets.

A 2,000 sq ft lawn + 5% waste ≈ 2,100 sq ft ÷ 450 ≈ 5 pallets.

الدقة والافتراضات

  • Subtract non-grass areas — flower beds, driveways, walkways, sheds, and pools aren't sodded.
  • Split irregular yards into rectangles, triangles, and circles, then add the pieces together.
  • One pallet covers about 450 sq ft, though suppliers range from 400 to 500 sq ft per pallet.
  • Add 5–10% waste so you have enough after trimming pieces to fit curves and edges.

نصائح وقواعد أساسية

  • Sod is sold three ways: by the square foot, by the individual slab, or by the pallet.
  • A standard slab is about 16 in × 24 in, which covers roughly 2.67 sq ft of ground.
  • A full pallet covers about 450 sq ft — confirm your supplier's exact figure before ordering.
  • Order fresh and lay it within 24 hours of delivery; sod dries out and yellows fast on the pallet.

New lawn installation

Measure the whole yard, subtract beds and hardscape, and order pallets for an instant lawn.

Patch and repair

Measure just the bare or damaged spots and buy sod by the slab instead of a full pallet.

Overseeding alternative

For thin or worn turf, sodding gives an immediate, established lawn where seeding would take weeks.

How to calculate square footage for sod

Sod square footage is simply the area of ground you want to cover in grass, measured in square feet. Because sod is a flat layer of living turf, there is no depth or volume to work out — the calculation is area = length × width, and nothing more. That makes it one of the easiest landscaping materials to estimate, as long as you measure the right space and remember to leave out everything that isn't going to be lawn.

Start by walking the yard and sketching it from above. Draw each open stretch of grass as its own rectangle, measure the length and width of each in feet, and multiply them. Add the rectangles together, then subtract the footprint of flower beds, the driveway, walkways, and the house or shed. What's left is your net sod area. This is the same approach you'd use for a full lawn estimate, just aimed at the sections you're laying turf on.

From square feet to pallets and slabs

Once you have the net area, you can order sod in whichever unit your supplier uses. Priced by the square foot, you buy the exact area plus a waste allowance. By the slab, divide your area by about 2.67 sq ft, the coverage of a standard 16-by-24-inch piece. By the pallet, divide by roughly 450 sq ft — the typical coverage of a full pallet, though it can run anywhere from 400 to 500 depending on the grower and slab size.

Always add 5–10% before you convert. Curved beds, angled walkways, and rounded corners force you to trim pieces, and the offcuts rarely fit anywhere else. A little extra also covers the odd broken or dried-out slab. Unlike a mulch order, where surplus just makes a thicker layer, leftover sod has a short shelf life, so aim for a modest cushion rather than a big one.

Ordering and laying fresh sod

Sod is a perishable, living product. It's cut to order at the farm and starts declining the moment it's stacked on the pallet, so time your delivery for the day you plan to install. On a warm day, unwatered sod can yellow within 24 hours, and heat-stressed turf may not root properly once it's down. Prep the soil, measure and order in one go, and have help ready so the whole yard goes down quickly.

أسئلة حول حاسبة Sod

Measure the length and width of each grassed area in feet and multiply them (area = length × width), then add the areas together. Subtract flower beds, the driveway, and any structures. For a 60 ft × 40 ft yard that's 2,400 sq ft; minus a 400 sq ft bed leaves 2,000 sq ft. Add 5–10% for cuts before ordering.

Divide your net square footage by about 450, the coverage of a typical pallet. A 2,000 sq ft lawn plus 5% waste is about 2,100 sq ft, which is roughly 5 pallets. Pallet coverage varies from 400 to 500 sq ft by supplier, so confirm the exact figure and round up rather than down.

Add 5–10% to your net area. The extra covers the pieces you trim to fit curves, angled edges, and rounded corners, plus the occasional broken or dried-out slab. Use the lower end for a simple rectangular yard and the higher end for lawns with lots of beds, paths, and curves that mean more cutting.

Break the yard into simple shapes — rectangles, triangles, and circles — measure each one, calculate its area, and add them together. A rectangle is length × width; a triangle is ½ × base × height; a circle is π × radius². Then subtract beds and hardscape, and add 5–10% waste to the total.
