The decompose-and-sum method for any irregular shape

Odd shapes look intimidating because there's no single formula that fits them, but almost every irregular area is really a handful of simple shapes stuck together. The universal method is to decompose the shape — divide it into rectangles, triangles, and circles — then calculate each piece with its own basic formula and add them up. A rectangle is length × width, a triangle is ½ × base × height, and a full circle is π × radius² (use half that for a semicircle). Once you can see those shapes hiding inside your floor plan or patio, the math is quick.

Start with a sketch drawn from directly above, then draw lines that split the area into clean pieces. An L-shaped room becomes two rectangles; a room with an angled wall becomes a rectangle plus a triangle; a bay window becomes a rectangle plus a semicircle. Measure each piece, calculate its area, and enter them into the calculator above one at a time — it keeps a running total so you never lose track of a section.

Handling curves and angled edges

Curves are the part people worry about most, but they don't need calculus. A single rounded end — like a bay window or the nose of a patio — is close enough to a semicircle: measure its width, halve that for the radius, and take half of π × radius². For a longer, wavy edge such as a free-form pond or garden bed, approximate it with a series of thin rectangles laid side by side, or with a triangle where the edge tapers to a point. The narrower your slices, the closer the approximation gets to the true area.

Angled walls are simpler still. Any straight cut across a corner creates a right triangle, and ½ × base × height gives its area exactly. Add that triangle to the rectangle it borders and the odd corner is handled with no guesswork.

Avoiding overlaps, gaps, and double-counting

The one rule that keeps the method accurate is that your pieces must tile the whole shape with no overlaps and no gaps. When you draw your dividing lines, each part of the area should belong to exactly one piece. It helps to shade each shape a different color on your sketch and label every measurement before you calculate anything.
