Qué significa

To find the square footage of a trapezoid, add its two parallel sides (bases a and b), multiply by the height h between them, and take half: Area = ½ × (a + b) × h. That is the same as averaging the two parallel sides and multiplying by the height. For sides of 12 ft and 8 ft with a 10 ft height, the area is ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 sq ft.

Fórmula y guía

Cómo se calcula

A trapezoid has two parallel sides (the bases, a and b) and a height h — the perpendicular distance between those parallel sides. The area is the average of the two bases multiplied by that height.

  1. 1Identify the two parallel sides and measure their lengths in feet (call them a and b).
  2. 2Measure the height h — the straight, perpendicular distance between the two parallel sides, not a slanted edge.
  3. 3Add the two parallel sides and divide by two to get their average: (a + b) ÷ 2.
  4. 4Multiply the average by the height: ½ × (a + b) × h gives the square footage.
Ejemplo resuelto

Míralo en números

Long base (a)12 ft
Short base (b)8 ft
Height (h, perpendicular)10 ft
Area = ½ × (12 + 8) × 10100 sq ft

Parallel sides of 12 ft and 8 ft with a 10 ft height give ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 sq ft.

Precisión y supuestos

  • You have correctly identified the two parallel sides — only those are the bases in the formula.
  • The height is the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides, not the length of a slanted side.
  • The average-side shortcut works: treat the shape as a rectangle whose width is (a + b) ÷ 2 and length is h.
  • You can also split the trapezoid into one rectangle plus one right triangle and add the two areas.

Consejos y reglas clave

  • The parallel sides are called the bases (a and b); they are the only two sides used in the formula.
  • Height must be measured perpendicular to the bases — a tape run along a sloped edge overstates it.
  • Averaging the parallel sides turns the trapezoid into an equivalent rectangle: average width × height.
  • The order of a and b does not matter — a + b is the same either way, so you can't reverse them.

Para quién es esta calculadora

Angled and irregular rooms

Rooms with one non-parallel wall are trapezoids — measure both parallel walls and the depth between them.

Tapered lots and yards

Property that narrows from front to back is a classic trapezoid; average the front and rear widths.

Gable ends and roof sections

Many roof planes and gable walls are trapezoidal — use the two parallel edges and the slope-adjusted height.

How to calculate the square footage of a trapezoid

A trapezoid is a four-sided shape with exactly one pair of parallel sides. Those two parallel sides are the bases, usually labelled a and b, and the perpendicular gap between them is the height, h. To find the square footage you average the two bases and multiply by the height: Area = ½ × (a + b) × h. Averaging matters because the shape is wider at one base than the other, and the average width behaves exactly like the width of a rectangle of the same height.

The most common mistake is measuring the wrong distance for the height. The height is the straight-line, perpendicular distance between the two parallel sides — not the length of either slanted edge. If you measure along a sloped wall, you will overstate the area. Pull the tape square across the shape instead. Once you have both bases and a true perpendicular height, the calculator above returns the square footage instantly.

Two easy ways to use the calculator above

The embedded tool has rectangle and triangle tabs, and either one handles a trapezoid. The fastest method is the rectangle-average trick: on the rectangle tab, enter the height as the length and enter the average of the two parallel sides — (a + b) ÷ 2 — as the width. With 12 ft and 8 ft bases the average is 10 ft, so a 10 ft × 10 ft rectangle gives the same 100 sq ft.

The second method splits the trapezoid into two familiar pieces: one rectangle plus one right triangle. Use the shorter base as the rectangle width and the height as its length, then treat the leftover wedge as a triangle whose base is the difference between the two parallel sides. Add the two results together for the total. Both methods give an identical answer — pick whichever matches how you took your measurements.

When a shape is more than one trapezoid

Real rooms and lots are often a combination of shapes rather than a single clean trapezoid. When that happens, divide the floor plan into non-overlapping rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids, calculate each piece separately, and add the areas. For heavily broken outlines with several angled walls, the irregular shapes approach — slicing the plan into simple pieces and summing them — is the reliable way to reach an accurate total.

Preguntas sobre la calculadora de Trapezoid

Add the two parallel sides (bases a and b), multiply by the perpendicular height h between them, and take half: Area = ½ × (a + b) × h. This is the same as averaging the two parallel sides and multiplying by the height. For 12 ft and 8 ft bases with a 10 ft height, the area is ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 sq ft.

They are called the bases, usually labelled a and b. A trapezoid has exactly one pair of parallel sides, and only those two are used in the area formula. The non-parallel sides (the legs) are not part of the calculation — you need the two bases and the perpendicular height between them.

Yes. Because Area = average of the parallel sides × height, you can treat a trapezoid as a rectangle whose width is (a + b) ÷ 2. Enter that average width and the height into a rectangle calculator and you get the correct square footage. Alternatively, split the trapezoid into a rectangle plus a triangle and add the two areas.

The height is the perpendicular distance between the two parallel sides — a straight line measured square across the shape, not along a slanted edge. Measuring along a sloped side overstates the height and the area. Always pull the tape at a right angle to the parallel sides to get a true height.
